Dr. Richard Horsley is the Head of the Department of Plant Sciences, the barley breeder at NDSU and coordinator of the NDSU malting barley improvement program. The primary goal of the breeding project is to release and develop six-rowed and two-rowed malting barley cultivars acceptable to barley producers in North Dakota, adjacent states, and the malting and brewing industry. As part of the breeding program, research is being conducted to identify genes affecting economically important traits using molecular mapping techniques. Current research efforts include the determination of the genetic basis of malt quality in closely related lines so we can identify DNA fingerprints that differentiate cultivars for specific brewer’s needs.
