The Carrington REC 63rd Annual Field Day is Tuesday, July 19, and everyone is invited.

Listen for us on the radio – Greg Endres, Kathy Wiederholt, and Mary Keena will be guests with “Greg in the Morning” on The Cardinal KDAK 1600 AM/100.1 radio shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Monday, July 18 and Tuesday, July 19. Tune in on your radio or online!

We now have confirmation that NDSU President Cook will attend our Field Day and greet tour attendees before our 9:30 a.m. tours begin. Traveling with President Cook will be Colleen Fitzgerald, NDSU’s Vice President of Research and Creative Activity; John Glover, CEO of the NDSU Foundation; Greg Lardy, NDSU’s Vice President of Agricultural Affairs; and Matt Larsen, NDSU’s Athletic Director – and Matt will be bringing the NCAA Division I FCS National Championship Football trophy!! We will have a photo booth ready for pictures with the trophy, but come early -- the trophy and NDSU administration are scheduled to leave for their next stops shortly after 1:00 p.m. After all, there are other Field Days to attend.

Current and potential NDSU students and parents -- there will be a informational booth and time to visit with David Buchanan, Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources, which encompasses study in the fields of Agribusiness and Applied Economics, Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Animal Sciences, Entomology, Microbiological Sciences, Natural Resources Management, Plant Pathology, Plant Sciences, Range Management, Soil Science.

If you missed last week’s Center Points blog, it’s still available with details about three of the five tour options available during our July 19 Field Day. We’ll continue this inside-look at our Field Day events by covering the remaining two tours, and two off-station tour opportunities.

A walk through our Northern Hardy Fruit Production orchard will be one of our morning tours with special guest and local vintner Bruce Gussiaas sharing details from the fruit-wine business he and his wife Merleen operate northeast of Carrington. After 1 p.m., tour of Dakota Sun Gardens and Winery will be available for a fee. Directions will be provided as needed.

The morning organic tour is all about production, especially NDSU’s pulse and oat breeding programs, and weed management. Wheat quality as it relates to millers and bakers is important to producers, so it’s an important topic for Field Day. Steve Zwinger, who leads CREC organic research, will look at his recent work with winter pea and winter rye.  An overview of opportunities available through USDA’s Sustainable Agriculture Research Education (SARE) program will be covered, as well.

The Northern Plains Sustainable Agriculture Society has scheduled a separate event at Cows & Co. Creamery southeast of Carrington in the afternoon. Individuals are welcome to attend a gelato and cheese tasting by registering with NPSAS in advance or during the Carrington field day.

Members of the ND Organic Advisory Board will attend our Field Day, so they will take advantage of this synergy and conduct their annual meeting at 1pm in our Library.

As you plan to attend the Carrington REC Field Day, remember these details. Come early. We’ll be ready for you with coffee and donuts at 9:00 a.m., and your best parking will be available early. Our welcome addresses will begin 9:15 a.m., and tour wagons leave the yard at 9:30 a.m.

All tours begin at our headquarters, 3.5 miles north of Carrington on Highway 281, and we’ll have trailers ready to carry our guests on each tour. Dress for the weather!

CREC staff will grill burgers for a picnic lunch, sponsored in part by the North Dakota Corn Utilization Council, North Dakota Soybean Council, Northern Pulse Growers Association, the North Central Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program, and the Northern Canola Growers Association.

As always, if you have any questions about the Carrington REC or our events, contact us. We’d love to help.
