North Dakota Nurturing Families Program™ (NFP) is a family-based parenting education program that help families establish a nurturing way of life and develop healthier, stronger relationships. Parents and children attend together so that all family members can benefit. Nurturing Families classes are sponsored by the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services and are offered at NO COST to families throughout North Dakota. Families participating in Nurturing Families classes will work to accomplish the following goals:

Nurturing Families Program
This 16-week program is designed to increase parenting skills and promote healthy family life. Classes provide information and practical experience on a number of important topics, including: communication, establishing routines, positive discipline and self-nurturing.

Note: the fathers-only version is 12-weeks, and is held online with male facilitators. The start time listed for in-person classes includes mealtime before class begins.

For Professionals

The Nurturing Families Program utilizes an evidence-based evaluation, the Adult-Adolescent Parenting Inventory (AAPI-2), which was designed to assess the parenting and child rearing attitudes of adult and adolescent parent and pre-parent populations. Based on the known parenting and child rearing behaviors of abusive parents, responses to the Inventory provide an index of risk for practicing behaviors known to be attributable to child abuse and neglect. As such, responses on the AAPI-2 provide an index of risk (high, medium, low) for practicing abusive and neglecting parenting and child rearing behaviors. The AAPI-2 is useful in assessing individual strengths and weaknesses involved in child rearing. The AAPI-2 is the revised and re-normed version of the original version first developed in 1979. Over 30 years of research has gone into refining the AAPI-2.

The following are the constructs measured by the AAPI-2:

Appropriate Expectations of Children
Parental Empathy Towards Children’s Needs
Use of Corporal Punishment
Reversal of Parent-Child Family Roles
Children’s Power and Independence

This sample participant profile plots pre- and post-class AAPI-2 results. Each participant meets individually with staff at the end of the program and receives a copy along with recommendations for continued growth.
